The City of El Paso Department of Health is reporting a fifth flu-related death this season.

According to public health officials, an elderly man in his mid-80s with underlying health issues who had not received the flu vaccine is the fifth person to pass away due to complications with the flu this year. The City of El Paso Health Department is encouraging residents to get a flu vaccine shot as a preventative measure and to consult with your primary doctor if you feel that symptoms do not alleviate with time.

The City of El Paso Department of Public Health advises to be proactive and consider getting the flu vaccine and reminds residents to help reduce infection by practicing the four C’s:

  • CLEAN – Always wash and scrub your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and water, or by using an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
  • COVER – Cover your cough or use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. You can also cough into your elbow if no tissue is available.
  • CONTAIN – Contain germs by staying home if you do get sick to prevent spreading germs.
  • CALL – Call or see your doctor if you or your child has a fever greater than 100 degrees.
