A 12-year-old girl in Valencia County, New Mexico is the first confirmed case of West Nile Virus this year. The girl was also hospitalized with neuroinvasive disease. The girl is now  recovering at home.

Just in 2014 alone there were 24 confirmed case of the West Nile virus in New Mexico resulting in one death. No one knows how the girl contracted the disease but authorities release a caution to the public on protecting themselves from the disease.

Stay away from mosquitoes as mush as possible either by staying inside after dusk or applying repellent with deet in it before being outside. The repellent also is suggested to be reapplied every 4 hours. Also when weather permits, wear long sleeves and pants to protect yourself from any exposure. Stay safe this summer.
