New Mexico state officials announced Thursday afternoon that they are closing all public schools in response to the coronavirus. Thursday evening, the El Paso Independent School District announced that they are extending spring break. The district posted this information on their Facebook page:

"The global concerns over COVID-19 (coronavirus) have led us to make several adjustments to our Spring Break schedule. The health of our EPISD employees and students is our priority, and while there have been no cases in El Paso, we believe it is better to operate with an abundance of caution. In order to proactively protect the health and safety of our students and campus community, EPISD will be extending the spring break holiday through March 27th. The district will reopen on Monday, March 30."

EPISD officials say they will use the extra week for a deeper spring cleaning of schools and school buses. The schools will be closed to the public March 16 - 20. The week of March 23 - 27, students will be offered breakfast and lunch for pick-up at select campuses.

The district will be releasing a schedule of times and locations next week. We will post that information in a follow-up article, as well as any further information that the district releases about their response to the coronavirus.
