El Paso’s COVID Surge Leads to Cancellation of ‘Holiday Movies at the Plaza Theatre’

‘Tis the season to catch holiday classics on the big screen. It just won't be at the Plaza Theatre.

"Holiday Movies at the Plaza" is the latest El Paso Christmas-time tradition to be put on pause because of COVID concerns. Any other year, the return of Winterfest to Downtown El Paso would mark the return of the holiday movie series as well. But, as we are all painfully aware, 2020 has been unlike any other year.

The ongoing coronavirus crisis has resulted in the cancellation of numerous Christmastime events, the latest of which is Holiday Movies at the Plaza.

Initially, the City of El Paso was set to reopen the theater for the event but the alarming surge in positive coronavirus cases and COVID-related deaths led to the change in plans. Although the city is going forward with Winterfest, it’s basically going to be lights and decorations only. You can read more about that HERE.

Thankfully for Christmas movie fans, there is an outdoor holiday flick-watching option. Doug Pullen, Program Director of the El Paso Community Foundation Plaza Classic Film Festival, suggests taking in a movie or two at the El Paso County Coliseum.

The El Paso Sports Commission is presenting "Christmas Cheer Drive-in Mistletoe Movies" in the coliseum parking lot from December 4-19. Yuletide selections include Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Bad Santa, Jingle All the Way, and Home Alone. You can get more details and the movie schedule by clicking HERE.
