If this year has taught us anything it's that there is no such thing as a small gesture. Anytime a friend reaches out with a "Hey, how are you doing?", or a co-worker brightens your day with an unexpected coffee makes dealing with the "new normal" of the COVID-19 pandemic a little easier to deal with.

Holidays have been especially hard on all of us because you either have to deal with the heartache of not getting together with your family and friends or you defy science and City and County officials and have a gathering but have to deal with the worry of someone possibly getting sick because of it. My oldest son Ryan and my granddaughters haven't come home from Austin since the spring and they won't be coming in for Christmas so I've been pretty bummed out, but my spirits were brightened a bit when I saw a Facebook event on my news feed:

Roller Derby queen Kay Shea is the elf behind this sweet effort. I spoke with Kay and she said hopes people will go out onto their doorsteps to ring a bell at 6 p.m. on December 24th to spread Christmas spirit and to help Santa fly his sleigh. Kay says 2020 has been such a awful year for everyone whether it be job loses, losing of loved ones, not being able to see people we care about, and El Paso has been through so much over the years she thought this would be an amazing idea for our community. Kay went on to say "nothing has been normal for adults or kids this year, but what a great way to help lift each others spirits old and young with just a small gesture. To hear bells surrounding you when you walk out at 6 p.m. on the 24th, it could mean so many things to so many people, love, hope, holidays, Santa, community, that we're all in this together and gonna pull through 2020!"

So get your bells ready to ring for just two minutes on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. and let's help Santa's sleigh fly and lift everyone's spirits!
