Earlier this month, an El Paso police was hit while on his motorcycle in east El Paso. Officer David Ortiz died of his injuries and was buried last week. The identity of the person who hit Officer Ortiz had not been released, prompting many in the community to wonder why the police department hadn't done so.
Now we know the name of the man who hit Officer Ortiz.
EPPD says 45-year-old John Perry was driving a Kia Optima that hit Officer Ortiz on March 10 while he was stopped at a red light on his motorcycle. Witnesses reported seeing the officer thrown from his vehicle and getting pinned under another vehicle. Ortiz died from his injuries on March 14.
Perry was also injured in the crash, and as of yet, there are no charges pending against him. This is not his first run-in with the law. Perry was convicted of assault on a peace officer in 1990.
El Paso Police are not releasing much information on the case or the investigation. They would only say that the incident remains under investigation.
