Did you know that dogs and cats can get heart disease? I didn't know that, and the Food and Drug Administration says some heart disease in dogs and cats can be caused by the foods they eat.

The FDA says that they started getting reports in January of 2014 from pet owners who said their dogs and cats were showing up with heart disease. In July of last year, the FDA issued its first alert about the possible link between certain pet foods and heart disease in dogs and cats. Then, in April of this year, they had gotten over 500 reports of canine heart disease and they noticed that the reports involved more than one animal from the same household. The FDA also noted that not one breed or size of pet was more affected by heart disease possibly caused by the pet foods.

The FDA has an active investigation into the brands they suspect are causing heart disease in dogs and cats. As they have in the past few years, they will be releasing more information to the public as it becomes available through their investigation. They need your help, however. If your dog or cat becomes symptomatic or is diagnosed with heart disease while on a diet of the pet food brands listed below, the FDA asks that either you or your veterinarian use the electronic Safety Reporting Portal or call Texas' FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators.
