The Recall Details

S. Martinelli & Co., based out of California, has recalled more than 7,000 cases of its classic apple juice. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the company announced the recall on March 18 after discovering potential contamination with a toxin called patulin.

The recall affects 7,234 cases, which amounts to more than 170,000 individual bottles. The product comes packaged in clear, round glass bottles with a white metal screw-top lid. Each case contains six packs of four 10-ounce bottles.

Where the Juice Was Distributed

While the recall stretches across 26 states, including places like California, New York, and Florida, Texans should pay close attention. A significant portion of these bottles ended up on shelves right here at home.

If you recently bought Martinelli’s apple juice in Texas, especially in the classic glass bottle, it is worth double-checking your pantry.

What Is Patulin and Why Is It a Concern?

Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by mold, usually found in rotting apples and apple products. According to the World Health Organization, if humans consume patulin, it can cause nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal issues.

For animals, the risks are even higher. Patulin exposure can lead to damage to vital organs like the liver, spleen, and kidneys. It can also negatively affect the immune system.

The FDA classified this as a Class II recall. That means the health risk is considered moderate. Temporary or reversible health effects could occur, but the chance of serious or life-threatening issues is low.

What Texans Should Do Now

If you have any Martinelli’s apple juice at home that matches the description, the safest move is to stop drinking it immediately. You can either dispose of the bottles or return them to the store where you bought them.

While it is disappointing to see one of my favorite apple juice brands go through something like this, safety has to come first. Hopefully, Martinelli’s will bounce back quickly, and we will be able to enjoy their juice without worry again soon.
