A selfless act by a 10-year-old El Paso girl is going to keep many people warm during the cold days and nights to come. Maya Avalos celebrated her recent birthday with a pizza party, but without the usual 10 year old girl birthday gifts. Instead, she asked guests for a new or gently used blanket so she could help the less fortunate keep warm.

Maya said in a television interview she made the decision after noticing her grandparents were always cold,  “and I didn’t want to think about the elderly or homeless people cold outside." Her moms says she's collected about 100 blankets so far and hopes to collect more.
