According to a recent survey by the National World War II Museum, 80 percent of Americans admit to having little or some knowledge of the reason behind the Memorial Day observance. While most everyone thinks of three days of cook outs and festivals, and a day off from work and school, there’s more going on here. So here’s a refresher course on what this weekend is all about:

In short, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. How one chooses to pay tribute can be anything from displaying an American flag to visiting a war memorial site or military cemetery.  Officially, you're asked to honor the fallen at 3 p.m  local time on Memorial Day for one minute.
