The Ysleta Independent School District is saying that they 'dropped the ball' when handling an incident involving a gun brought to school by a student earlier this week.

The unidentified student brought an unloaded BB gun to class at Tierra Del Sol, and district officials say the gun went off while inside the student's backpack. How an unloaded gun went off was not made clear by the district.

YISD officials say they called the El Paso Police department about the incident, and also informed the parents of the student about the incident, but they never let the parents of the other students at the school know about what had happened.
A parent whose child attends Tierra Del Sol says she was upset about not being told about the incident in light of the district notification to parents at Eastwood High School about a similar incident recently.

YISD officials say they didn't handle the situation at Tierra Del Sol as well as they could have, and they are going to call parents in the Tierra Del Sol neighborhood on Monday about the incident and hopefully "put their minds at ease."
