Parents in the Ysleta Independent School District got some good news from the district. They are now going to be able to watch their kids when they are participating in sports events. So many student athletes had their high school sports careers either completely destroyed by the pandemic cancelling their last season in high school or they had to deal with all the restrictions that were put into place so they could participate, and their parents missed out as well.

Fast forward to this school year when parents in YISD were, in many cases, not allowed to attend games or meets because of COVID restrictions. A few weekends ago, I ran into some parents who were watching their kids competing in a track and field and because of COVID restrictions, they had to watch their kids from outside the Eastwood High School fence to see their kiddos compete.

YISD must have gotten the message because on Monday they announced that parents of participating student athletes will be able to go to outdoor sports competitions this spring. There are, of course, restrictions that will have to be followed, but not having to sit on your car roof is going to be something parents will be very glad to hear.

Here are some of the rules for parents:

1. All parents of participating student-athletes will be required to undergo a health screening for COVID-19 symptoms before entering the venue.
2. All parents will have to wear face coverings or masks and maintain social distancing.

Boys and girls soccer:

1. Each student-athlete on both teams can have two parents at the event, but not during tournaments because there will be multiple teams playing.
2. Student groups like cheerleaders or the band of the hosting school can perform at half-time. Two parents per student in those student groups is allowed to attend.

For baseball:

1. Two parents can attend per student from each team if there is enough seating capacity, but again, not during tournaments

For softball:

1. Two parents can attend per student from each team if there is enough seating capacity, but again, not during tournaments

Boys and Girls Track and Field:

1. Two parents can attend per student athlete but not during large meets with multiple teams on one site

Boys and Girls Tennis:

1. Each student athlete on each team is allowed two parents

YISD will also be releasing information about indoor athletic events in the next few weeks. Get more details on the YISD website by clicking here.
