Some older El Pasoans might know the story of hook handed private detective, Jay J. Armes, who did a bunch of really amazing things that sound like they were ripped straight from movies and tv shows. Armes lost his hands as a kid while messing with railroad torpedoes, then he went on to become an actor for a while before moving back to his hometown of El Paso to start a P.I. Firm. As a Private Investigator, the stories of the things that happened to Armes sound even more insane than his real life. From helicopter adventures to fighting off assassins, Armes had supposedly done some wild stuff throughout his career. Enough stuff to get him the self proclaimed title of "Worlds Greatest Private Detective."

Marlon Brando was born today, April 3rd, and is considered by many to be the greatest actor of all time. Not because his acting was so amazing that it could never be beaten, but because he broke all the rules when it came to acting and gave us the forms of acting we know now. In Brando's time, actors were trained to deliver their lines clearly and most even sounded the exact same. Brando delivered his lines more realistically, mumbling through certain words, delivering lines less like a character and more like a real person.

How do these two figures connect?

Well one of the stories that Jay J. Armes used to tell was about the time he rescued Marlon Brando's 13 year old son from the clutches of evil hippies hiding out in an ocean cave in Mexico. Yeah, wild.

An article was written about Armes years ago that exposed his many adventures as very tall tales and that was it. Armes was trying to build these grandiose images of himself in hopes of getting tv deals that could turn his stories into full on episodes of action packed television. If he would have been able to do so, maybe his story about saving Brando's son would have been an exciting episode.

Armes claims that he flew around Mexico in a helicopter scouting for a vehicle that had been seen with this group of hippies Brando's wife knew. As he was scouting, he saw the vehicle parked in a seaside volcanic cave where the evil hippies were hiding out with Brando's son. From there, it was all action movie fodder as Armes saved Marlon Brando's son and reunited them in what Armes described as a very emotional moment.

What do you think? Did Armes really do all of the incredible things he said or is he just blowing smoke??
