Christmas cards have been a Christmas tradition for eons. A few years ago, I decided to modernize.

Christmas cards can be the "bulk", box of 20 for X dollars or they can be unique works of art to be treasured for years and years. Everyone is different on this one.

Many folks let the internet handle it with "E" - cards and digitally generated messages. Some peeps just send you a Santa, reindeer or Christmas tree emoji and they're done. I lean toward that group for a few reasons.

First, it's kind of a waste. You spend time picking out the right card(s), you spend money to purchase said cards, you may or may not spend more on postage and, for what?

Your bud reads it, smiles, sets it on the counter for a couple of weeks and then tosses it with the ripped up wrapping paper. You may as well just write "Merry Christmas" on a dollar bill ... or a 5 if you're a "fancy" card person, whatever ... and hand them that.

At least they'll get something they like with the money and you spent about the same as you would have anyway.

That's why I started buying little, airline sized bottles of tequila, silver of course, and giving those out with a hug or a handshake and a joyful "Merry Christmas".

Our sales director makes cookies and gives each of us a little pack of 'em which led a co-worker to once remark that ... I quote ... "the two most anticipated moments of the holiday season were her cookies and my Christmas cards". I love that.

They're happy, I showed them they were thought of, no trees were harmed, waste was kept to a minimum and I avoided giving the government anything beyond sales tax.

That's just me though, what else might El Pasoans give in leu of Christmas cards? Hmm...

If they weren't so cumbersome, orange barrels might be a thought. Nothing sums up El Paso better than those things.
