The UTEP women's basketball team faced their toughest test of the early season today. Unlike NMSU, the New Mexico Lobos proved too much for the Miners to handle. Their rebounding, crisp passes, and excellent free throw shooting allowed the to build an early lead and never look back. UTEP never got closer than 10 points in the second half and they lost their first game of the season to UNM by a 93-78 final score.

"We just didn’t guard well enough to get the job done," UTEP head coach Kevin Baker said after the game. "New Mexico is a good team, the best one we’ve played so far this year. They attack you so hard. We could never really play the game on our terms defensively. We did a lot of things to try to slow them down."

Katarina Zec led the Miners with 16 points, Tayana Modawar came off the bench to score 12, and Katia Gallegos added 10 for UTEP. The Lobos were led by Jordan Hosey who scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Next up for the Miners will be Saturday night at 7 p.m. against the NMSU Aggies in the Battle of I-10. Duke Keith and Traci Miller will call the action from the Don Haskins Center on 600 ESPN El Paso.
