Today is your last day to apply for the El Paso Police Department. EPPD is expected to have two academies next spring, but the numbers of applicants are much fewer than hoped by the department. EPPD officials say about 1,000 people have applied, but they were hoping to get 3,000.

The department is facing a shortage of officers because a record number of current officers are eligible for retirement next March. EPPD also loses some 50 officers a year because they move to other law enforcement organizations that offer higher pay.

EPPD officers earn around $40,000 a year. By contrast, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers make a little over $60,000, and El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies earn around $47,000.
