The fall season has arrived,  which is the perfect time to break out with our beloved San Marcos cobijas.

I know temperatures are still in the 70s with plenty of scattered showers, but it'll soon be windy and cold, and nothing warms you up better than a San Marcos cobija (blanket).

If you were raised on the borderland, the chances are that you grew up with a San Marcos cobija, which has kept families warm since the late 70s.

My earliest memories of these beloved thick, plush blankets were being peddled across the border in Juarez and Tijuana and sold for about $20 back in the day.

However, good luck finding authentic San Marcos cobijas now – the factory where the blankets, named after the factory's location in the San Marcos neighborhood in Aguascalientes, MX, closed in 2004.

Sure, you can find them on eBay, but you can expect to pay hundreds for an original cobija. Online merchants like Amazon also sell similar knockoffs but are not the original San Marcos blankets.

So, what's the big deal with these blankets?

Firstly, these blankets are legit the warmest ever and are highly sought after because they are discontinued, hence the hefty price tag.

Secondly, they are the original weighted blanket doubling as bedspreads or sofa slipcovers. Their appeal also stemmed from the images repeated on both sides of the blanket in reverse colors.

San Marcos blankets also came in various sizes and vivid designs from tigers to horses, the Virgen Mary to kittens, football team logos, including my ultimate favorite, that of Strawberry Shortcake.

While I never did get the Strawberry Shortcake version, I do have a couple in my possession that I adore to this day.

And because these blankets are so unique, I maintain them yearly by sending them to the cleaners.

So while it may still not be super cold yet - I'm ready to snuggle up and wrap myself into a burrito this winter season with my beloved San Marcos cobijas.
