El Paso Police have released the mugshot of the moron who destroyed a historic piece of El Paso and El Paso Catholic Diocese history. 30–year old Isaiah Cantrell was arrested and charged with criminal mischief and possession of marijuana on Wednesday. Cantrell is being held in the El Paso County Detention Facility on $20,500 bond.

Police say Cantrell walked into St. Patrick's Cathedral on Tuesday morning and pulled down the almost 90-year-old Sacred Heart of Jesus statue that stood behind the main altar of the downtown El Paso church.

The statue was decapitated and lost one of its arms when it hit the floor of the cathedral. Bishop Mark Seitz said that while he was sad that the historic statue was destroyed, he said he is glad that the suspect didn't attack a person.

El Paso churches have been vandalized a number of times over the past year or so. St. Patrick's was vandalized a number of times in the past 18 months. One of the windows at St. Patrick's was broken when a Molotov cocktail hit it before bouncing off, landing on the sidewalk and catching fire. Other churches that have sustained damage in the past year or so:

May 7, 2019 – St. Matthew Catholic Church; 400 W. Sunset
May 12, 2019 – St. Patrick Cathedral; 1118 N. Mesa
June 15, 2019 – St. Jude; 4006 Hidden Way
December 6, 2019 – St. Thomas Aquinas; 10970 Bywood
June 14, 2020 – Destiny Family Christian Center; 9615 Dyer Street
July 20, 2020 – Abundant Living Faith Center West; 7100 N. Desert Boulevard

I can't imagine why someone would do something like this. The church was open for prayer, for peaceful gathering, not for some moron to walk in and destroy something. If there was any justice the person who did this should have to destroy something of value that he owns to atone for his destruction.

I know as a Catholic I'm supposed to turn the other cheek but I can't. I'm really pissed off about this. If someone had destroyed something this person owns he would be understandably angry and not likely to turn his other cheek. You don't like the Church? Then don't go inside. Jerk face &@#$.
