Ah, Thanksgiving—a time for turkey, stuffing, and one of the oldest family traditions: the Kids Table.

For generations, families have divided dinner seating into two camps—the adults table for the grown-ups and the kids table for, well, the kids. It’s a setup meant to keep things organized, with adults enjoying conversation while the little ones chatter about the latest cartoons or school adventures. But is this tradition becoming outdated?

I have mixed feelings about this topic because I remember how much fun it was to be away from the adults and enjoy silly conversations with my siblings and cousins who were all around my age. However, I also remember when I tried moving up to the adult table with my other siblings and I was DENIED!!

Recently on our “Am I the Jerk?” segment, a frustrated teen shared their thoughts on the tradition. They felt stuck at the kids table, even though they’re a teenager, and argued that it’s time to graduate to the adult table and he even went so far as to say that the kids table should be canceled because it’s outdated!

We took the debate to Facebook and asked our listeners:

What age do you think kids should graduate from the kids table? As expected, opinions were all over the place!

Some argued that 13 is the magic age because it marks the start of the teen years. Others said it depends on maturity, or that it’s only fair to move kids up when there’s space at the adults table.

Whether you’re team “Kids Table Forever” or “Scrap the Tradition,” one thing is clear: Thanksgiving traditions have a way of bringing families closer together—even if it’s over a little healthy debate.
