The internet is such a powerful tool. It can be used for a lot of good things. Then, there are the not-so-good things. When it comes to having an online presence, the safety of you and your family should come first. The dark web is a scary place and it's out there. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to obtain all kinds of information about anyone, anytime, online.

If you're still skeptical about how easy it is to have personal information floating around out there, visit Family Tree Now and see for yourself. Pretty creepy, huh? I searched myself and was able to see old addresses and phone numbers, even defunct social media accounts.

When this much information is available online, the world is indeed a spooky place. The good news is, there's a way out of this wicked web. Here's what to do:

  • Go to the website.
  • At the very bottom of the page, click on "Privacy".
  • On the "Privacy Policy" page, find the blue opt-out hyperlink under the "Your Rights" section.
  • On the "Opt Out of Records" page, enter your email and click the Begin Opt Out Procedure button.
  • Re-enter your information and click the Search button.
  • Click the green View Details button.
  • Click the red button that says Opt Out This Record.
  • That's it. A new page should pop up that says "Your opt-out request is being processed. Please allow up to 48 hours for your record to be removed."
When this much information is readily available online, the world is indeed a spooky place.

I went through the process myself and it only took a few minutes. I'll take that as a win. The less of my personal information that's out there, the better. How about you?
