Sunset Amphitheater Approved Despite Opposition

In a move that's got everyone talking, the El Paso City Council has officially given the green light to Venu Inc., formerly known as Notes Live, to build the much-anticipated Sunset Amphitheater in Northeast El Paso. But it wasn't without some drama!

City Reps. Josh Acevedo, Cassandra Hernandez, and Isabel Salcido were not feeling the love for this deal. They voted against the 380 Agreement, pointing out a non-compete clause that’s more intense than similar venues in Colorado Springs, Tulsa, and McKinney, Texas. The trio even tried to press pause on the approval, but it was a no-go as city Reps. Brian Kennedy, Joe Molinar, Art Fierro, and Chris Canales pushed it through.

So, what’s all the fuss about? The 12,500-seat amphitheater is set to rise on the old Cohen Stadium site and aims to open by March 2026. The deal includes a clause that bars the city from hosting competing events within a 60-mile radius and gives Venu Inc. the first dibs if the city finally moves forward with the long-awaited multi-purpose performing and cultural arts center.

Despite the concerns, the project comes with some juicy perks. Venu Inc. is pouring $80 million into the construction, promising to bring at least 40 national acts to El Paso each year. In return, the city is providing 17 acres of prime real estate at Cohen Avenue and Gateway Boulevard North. Plus, no General Fund money will be used – the funding is coming from various sources like the Texas Economic Development Fund and the Cohen Site Readiness Fund.

Mayor Oscar Leeser couldn't be happier, stating, "This is really an important step forward for our community," highlighting the positive impact on the quality of life and place for El Paso residents.

Construction is set to kick off as soon as August, with the venue ready to rock by March 2026. Whether you're for it or against it, the project looks like its going forward.
