UPDATE: The remains found were that of a 61-year-old Las Cruces man. Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office detectives identified the man on Wednesday as Robert Reed, who reportedly lived off West Fleming Avenue in Las Cruces. Kelly Jameson of DASO said the investigation is ongoing.

Skeletal remains were found less than a quarter mile away from Fairacres Elementary School in Las Cruces Monday morning.

Police have been combing the are ever since skeletal remains were found near a school in Las Cruces. Two landscape workers were clearing brush when they discovered a tarp. Inside the tarp was skeletal remains. There is no way of telling if the body found was that of a male or female.

The remains have been sent off to experts for an autopsy and possible identification of the body. Detectives on the scene have described the remains as "severely decomposed" so there is no telling if much can be done now in finding out anything about the gruesome find. We will be updating this story as the remains return from Albuquerque.
