Raise a Stein to German Food, Bier, and Culture at Ft. Bliss Oktoberfest Celebration
Just because we’re a world away from Germany doesn’t mean you can’t properly celebrate Oktoberfest.
The Fort Bliss community will be hosting its annual autumnal celebration next month, so a trip to the Northeast is as far as you have to go to get your Oktoberfest fix of German polka music, bratwurst, pretzels, and beer. Steins and steins of bier.
Men in lederhosen and Frauleins in dirndls are always part of the mix, too. And did I mention steins and steins full of bier? Prost! (That’s German for ‘cheers!’)
Why is Oktoberfest in September?
Given the name, one would think Oktoberfest would happen in October. And it did way back in the day when it first began in Germany, and still kind of does according to Readers Digest.
Along the way it become such a big deal that “the starting dates were moved into September because the days were longer and the weather was warmer.”
The dates change annually, but on or about mid-September is when it usually falls.
Oktoberfest 2022
Biggs Park on Fort Bliss will double for Deutschland September 16-18, 2022.
And it’s not just for military folks. The event is open to the entire El Paso community, you just need to have a Recreational Pass to get on base. More on that below.
1,500 tickets are available for each of the two ticketed nights (Sunday, Sept.18 is Free Family Day), and the event never fails to sell out so buying tickets in advance is the smart move.
Recreational Pass
The pass gets the general public on base and gives them access to many of the family-friendly activities on Ft. Bliss for one year. All visitors over the age of 16 must have one to get onto the installation. More info HERE.
