Prominent El Paso Personalities Salute The Class of 2020
Some of El Paso's prominent personalities are coming together for a unique celebration of El Paso high school students for the Class of 2020.
Commencement 2020, is bringing together over 30 prominent El Pasoans, who have recorded individualized special messages for the Class of 2020. The videos saluting high school students will be released over the next two weeks on elpasomatters.org, the digital news site founded by award-winning journalist Robert Moore.
El Paso area high school students have been uprooted from their classrooms to at-home sessions due to the novel coronavirus that forced schools to shut down across America. The senior graduates of the class of 2020 were faced with the possibility of not being able to walk the stage at their indoor graduation ceremonies. Although now some school districts including EPISD and SISD will be hosting outdoor graduation ceremonies slated for later this summer.
Some of the notable personalities featured in the Commencement 2020 Video include:
- An Academy Award winner
- A Grammy Award winner
- A best-selling author
- Social justice leaders
- Entrepreneurs
- Elected officials
- A retired general
- A former astronaut
- Sports figures
Some of the first videos are already out and included messages from the former University of Texas at El Paso President Dr. Diana Natalicio, New York Giants guard, and UTEP graduate Will Hernandez, musician Jim Ward, and KVIA co-anchor Stephanie Valle.
