New Mexico Marathon Runner Survives Bear Attack
Imagine being almost done with your marathon race and coming over a hilltop only to see a black bear charging straight for you. That's exactly what happened to Karen Williams on Sunday in Albuquerque when she was running an organized mountain race in the wilderness.
It seems Karen had unknowingly startled the bear so it proceeded to attack her before she could lay on the floor and crawl into the fetal position. The attack is considered rare in New Mexico but left Karen with a fractured right eye socket and a ripped eyelid.
The bear was protecting her 3 cubs when she attack, she was caught later in the day and later euthanized. Many are having issues with this part of the story as it was a wild animal trying to protect her young. Karen was airlifted to a nearby hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.
