Nationwide Recall: E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Carrots—Are You at Risk?
A Nationwide E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Organic Carrots Has Claimed One Life—Here’s What You Need to Know
Recalls unfortunately happen often, but it’s not often when recalls claim lives and hospitalize dozens! Well, news broke that an alarming E. coli outbreak tied to organic whole and baby carrots has sickened 39 people across 18 states, leading to 15 hospitalizations and one death, according to the CDC.
What To Know:
Check your fridge to make sure you DON’T have organic whole and baby carrots from Grimmway Farms. If you do, THROW THEM OUT!
The outbreak prompted a massive recall of organic whole carrots sold without a “best-if-used-by” date between August 14 and October 23, 2024, and organic baby carrots with dates ranging from September 11 to November 12, 2024. These products were distributed across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada under popular brands like Bunny Luv, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Simple Truth.
The recall affects:
- Baby Organic Carrots
- Best-if-used-by dates: 9/11/2024 to 11/12/2024
- Brands: Bunny Luv, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Simple Truth, 365, and more
- Whole Organic Carrots
- Purchase dates: Approximately 8/14/2024 to 10/23/2024 (no dates on bags)
- Brands: Bunny Luv, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Simple Truth, and others
What To Do If You Purchased This Item:
Consumers, check your fridges! Toss any recalled carrots immediately. Businesses should also ensure these items aren’t being served. If you’ve eaten these carrots and experience symptoms, seek medical help ASAP and mention recent food consumption to your provider.
What to Do:
- Consumers: Toss any recalled carrots and wash surfaces they touched.
- Businesses: Do not sell or serve these products. Sanitize surfaces and items that came into contact with them.
- If you experience symptoms like bloody diarrhea, dehydration, or vomiting, seek medical attention immediately.
Symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli often start 3-4 days after exposure and may include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. While recovery takes 5-7 days for most, some may face serious kidney complications.
