I gotta tell you, I've never understood the appeal of running. First off, I have absolutely no coordination. I can't walk and chew gum at the same time, so running and watching out for traffic and listening to Eye of the Tiger so I can keep up a good pace - it's all too much for me to worry about. But there are fierce women out there who triathlon like the wind and they are getting ready to begin training for one of the premiere running events in El Paso, the Mighty Mujer Triathlon.

I didn't know this, but when you are a real runner, you train for months before an event, you don't just wake up and say 'hey, I think I'll run a triathlon today." Nope, you have to train in biking, swimming, and running so your body is ready for the race featuring two distances: Super Sprint and Sprint. Both distances start with a 300-yard swim in an indoor pool. The course then takes athletes on a challenging and rewarding bike route (1 loop for Super Sprint, 2 loops for Sprint). The race finishes off with a run through the beautiful Memorial Park area of Central El Paso (2 loops for Super Sprint, 3 loops for Sprint).

If you want to take part in the Mighty Mujer Triathlon, check out the kick off party Thursday, January 18 from 5 - 7:30 p.m. at Tabla, 115 Durango St.
