Texas Bakers Band Together To Deliver Sweet Treats to Uvalde Families
Calling all bakers! "Cookies for Uvalde" needs you!
With the one year anniversary of the tragic shooting in Uvalde coming up, the community of Uvalde, and the entire nation, is still healing. But bakers from across the country are looking to help spread some joy with their sweets!
Brianne Gonzales of Honeybee's Sweets and Treats in El Paso put forth a call to action for all bakers to donate their time and sweets to send cookies to the staff and faculty of Robb Elementary.

Gonzales, or Honeybee, informed me that they had a similar event like this last year following the shooting. Because the event was so successful, they're doing it once again this year!
The event was hosted at the only Starbucks in Uvalde where employee Nancy and bakers from across Texas donated their time and work to help the community heal.
Hosting this event once again this year is a way for Uvalde to know that they're not alone, and that the nation stands with them. Gonzales, who is helping organize bakers in El Paso, told me that as an El Pasoan, she understands what the community of Uvalde is going through.
I had told her and others in Uvalde that what happened hit close to home for me. Their community reminds me so much of El Paso and especially since they’re a primarily Hispanic community, it just hit even more. It reminded me of everything that happened here and felt like I was living it all over again, and I wasn’t even in Uvalde! Unfortunately there’s this feeling you have after a tragedy like a shooting that is indescribable but somehow our friends in Uvalde understood it exactly. It’s a strange sad bond we have, but it’ll make both of our communities stronger.
Events like the Cookies for Uvalde one, are a great way for communities to gather and heal- it may sound trivial, but it does make a lasting impact.
The event is May 23rd, and while there is no set deadline, Gonzales does encourage any bakers interested to sign up as soon as they can so they have enough time to make their goods and ship.
As an El Pasoan, I think many of us can relate, and I know that many are eager to help out.
If you're a baker, or know of a baker who would be interested in this event, you can sign up here.
