Old Big 8 Ad Shows Just How Much Prices Have Changed in 35 Years
Remember Biggie the Bag?
The most iconic caricature in El Paso history is right! He was Big 8's mascot. Remember Big 8? They're all Food King's now- but I digress. RIP Biggie the Bag!
Big 8 was one of our favorite local places to get groceries- aside from Food City- they always had great deals on all your essentials like bread, milk and even other necessities like laundry detergent and toilet paper.
Well, I don't even know how I stumbled upon this crazy El Paso commercial from 1988 and it was for Big 8- and I was so shocked at the prices back then! Check it out below:
There is so much to unpack from that aside from the prices! The music, the way the products used to look and even that Don Haskins cameo! I remember seeing Big 8 ads all the time- these days I rarely see any ads for local grocery stores.
But let's unpack those prices- can you believe Downy- the good brand- used to just be $1.98? These days, you're lucky if you find it under five dollars!
Also, there's so many varieties of fabric softener.
Tide is a detergent that has gotten so popular that they had to create warnings against ingesting their pods! But once upon a time it was just a powdered detergent- and it was $1.88!
As you can see below- it comes in a variety of sizes and it can be found for just under $10.
I know that this was 1988- 35 years ago! But I was still a little stunned when I saw the price differences! You might not be as surprised as I was, but I think we can all agree that we wish we could go back to these prices! Also, someone remind me to add fabric softener to my grocery list!
