Texas Has a Huge German Influence & It Continues to Grow
Over 30 million people live in the entire state of Texas; people off all different types of ethnicities, countries & backgrounds live in the Lone Star State. One fact that people didn't know is that Texas has a HUGE European influence in the state; most of that is thanks to our huge German population.
How many Germans live in Texas?
According to the Texas State Historical Association, Germans make up the largest ethnic group of Europeans in Texas. Many German settlers arrived to Texas in the 1830 in hopes to flea from religious & political oppression in their home country. By 1900, over 40,000 Germans were living in the Lone Star State.
Today, over 2.4 million Germans call Texas their home; when compared to the rest of the country, we rank #4 overall.
Many Texas towns were inspired by German heritage
Towns like New Ulm, Frelsburg, Bleiblerville, Oldenburg, Weimar, Schulenburg, Gruene, New Braunfels, Boerne, Fredericksburg, and Luckenbach all have clear German inspiration. All these towns help make up the Texas German Belt. And of course there's a special dialect of German spoken here in Texas called...well, Texas German.
ANd of course that German influence had an effect on the food we eat in Texas too. One of the most popular German restaurants & bar in Texas is the Scholz Garten in Austin.
Other Texas spots you can try are:
- the Bavarian Grill in Dallas/Fort Worth,
- the Walberg German Restaurant in Walberg
- the Little Bavarian Restaurant in El Paso
- & you can see a whole list here.
Of course there are many Texas German recipes for you to try out too.
So to our German brothers & sisters in Texas, I'd like to raise a toast & say Danke!
