Don’t Miss Tonight’s Strawberry Moon Over El Paso

El Paso skywatchers are in for a treat tonight as the June full moon, better known as the Strawberry Moon, rises to brighten the evening sky.

The Strawberry Moon is the traditional name for June’s full moon, marking the first full moon of the summer season. 

Despite its sweet-sounding name, don't expect the moon to glow pink or red. The name "Strawberry Moon" comes from Native American tribes, who used it to mark the short strawberry harvesting season in June. Depending on atmospheric conditions, however, the moon may appear golden, orange, or amber as it rises above the horizon.

When Can You See Tonight’s Strawberry Moon?

The Strawberry Moon reaches its peak fullness at 5:56 p.m. MDT (6:56 p.m. CDT) on Monday, June 29. 

In El Paso, the best time to see it will be shortly after moonrise, around 8:10 to 8:30 p.m. MDT, just after sunset. Look toward the eastern to southeastern horizon for the most dramatic view. Because the moon stays low in the sky this time of year, it often appears much larger than usual thanks to an optical illusion known as the "moon illusion."

Viewing Tips To See The Strawberry Moon

If you want to get the best viewing experience find a location with a clear view of the eastern horizon and an area that has minimal light pollution meaning somewhere that doesn't have too many lights.Parks, open spaces, and areas outside the city will provide the clearest views. 

While binoculars aren't necessary, they'll reveal more detail on the moon's surface. If you're planning to take photos, use a tripod or steady surface and capture the moon soon after it rises, when its warm orange and golden hues are often at their brightest.

If skies remain clear, tonight's Strawberry Moon will be one of the most beautiful celestial events of the summer, making it the perfect excuse to step outside, look up, and enjoy the view.
