By now, you may have already heard the news that the El Paso City Council unanimously voted to purchase Morehead Middle School and turn it into a migrant shelter- and also an animal shelter.

The mayor, Oscar Leeser, recently joined the Morning Show to discuss the migrant issue, and to discuss just how exactly the shelter/former middle school will be used. He mentioned that the recent influx of migrants have overwhelmed regular shelters and the city has been forced to use other facilities as shelters such as Nations Tobin Park recreation center.

You can listen to that episode below.

Federal funds were used to purchase Morehead Middle from the El Paso Independent School District- and according to El Paso Matters, the price tag was $3.8 million; but before the sale is complete, the city plans to rent the property. You can read all about it here.

My one question remains: when did Morehead stop being a school?! Believe it or not, I went to Morehead Middle School! Of course, it's been quite awhile, but I'll never forget those three years; also, it took me the whole three years to figure out the "joke" of the name Morehead.

I know that since the pandemic, several schools had shut down; but I never noticed when Morehead stopped having students! Also, these are from my eighth grade graduation- see if you can spot me here!

I wonder how much of the original property will be used; and if the place where I got my first kiss will also be destroyed? Until then, farewell, Morehead- thanks for the memories!
