Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it concerns your children and their safety.

If your kids will be hitting the streets in search of treats, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office offers these recommendations to keep them safe while out walking:

• Make sure all children are accompanied and supervised by an adult

• Carry a fully charged cell phone and flashlight with fresh batteries. For extra visibility consider using "glow sticks" or reflective tape on costumes or bags

• Stay in familiar neighborhoods and do not allow your children to visit darkened houses or take short cuts through backyards or alleys

• Use the sidewalk when possible and stay off main roadways. If a sidewalk is not an option, walk facing traffic and as close to the shoulder as possible

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Halloween is one of the top three days for pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
