Las Crucens Cheer “Freedom Convoy;” Not Sure If It Was Actually Them…

On Thursday, a handful of New Mexicans gathered on an overpass to cheer on the convoy of trucks they believed were part of the “freedom convoy” protesting mask and vaccine policies.

But, even the people who showed up with flags and signs weren’t sure which trucks were part of the convoy or even if ANY of the convoy passed by.  One organizer, a woman named Sarah, told the Las Cruces Sun-News that she “believed” some of the trucks she saw might have been part of the American Freedom Truckers convoy.

In addition to American flags, supporters also displayed Canadian, “Don’t Tread on Me”, Gadsden, “Trump 2024” and “Let’s Go Brandon” flags. Most of them like to believe at least some of the trucks they saw passing through were part of the protest convoy but no one could say for sure.

The supporters, much like the possibly-real convoy, seemed a little muddled. Yes, there were trucks passing by. Yes, some of them seemed like they might have been bunched up. No, it’s not clear that these trucks were part of a protest or just, you know…traffic.

We know there was SUPPOSED to be a convoy of truckers sympathetic to the February trucker protests in Canada (hence the Maple Leaf flags). But a couple of recent events might have taken the wind out of the sales. First, many of the mask mandates across the U.S. were ending just as the protest convoy was coming together.  It must have seemed anti-climactic to protest COVID restrictions just as many of those restrictions were being loosened.

Also, Russia attacked Ukraine.  Maybe truckers not wanting to get a free and effective vaccine just seemed silly compared to innocent people being bombed and displaced every day on the news. Is there a convoy headed to Washington? Maybe. Does it seem to be as big a deal as it would have a couple of weeks ago? That’s a big negatory, good buddy!
