El Paso College Students Can Now Compete Nationally in Esports
There’s a new sport in town! Well, kinda. El Paso Community College is pressing start on something totally new because esports is officially becoming part of the school’s athletic lineup. Yup, video games can be more than just a hobby for you or your kids!
Esports, aka competitive gaming, is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide, with tournaments, leagues, and bragging rights on the line. Now, EPCC students will get their shot at competing against more than 200 schools across the country through the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE).
According to a press release sent by EPCC, games include League of Legends, Halo, Rocket League, Call of Duty, Madden 24, Mario Kart, and more. (Basically, if you’ve ever yelled at your controller at 2 a.m., this is your moment.)
The move comes after EPCC’s Student Government Association pitched the idea, and school leaders were all in. “We don’t just see esports as a game—it’s an opportunity,” said EPCC Board Chair Judge Brian Haggerty.
The brand-new Tejanos Esports Team will be led by Interim Coach (and lifelong gamer) Adan Lara, who’s ready to build a powerhouse program. Student players like art major Dinamaris Guevara Dominici are hyped too: “We might be the first to start this, but we won’t be the last.”
Esports is more than just button smashing, it builds teamwork, leadership, and opens up career opportunities in a billion-dollar industry. With tournaments starting this fall, EPCC is about to show the nation that the 915 has some serious gaming skills.
