In more than two years, the first total lunar eclipse brought on a spellbinding display thanks to a simultaneous cosmic phenomenon. The combination of a supermoon combined with a total lunar eclipse, or blood moon - resulted in a reddish-orange color of the super ‘blood’ moon thanks to all the sunrises and sunsets in Earth’s atmosphere projected onto the surface of the eclipsed moon.

Pictures and video have been shared across social media from Alaska to California, Turkey, and Indonesia of the celestial spectacle, including here in El Paso, where one local photographer captured the mesmerizing shot of the lunar eclipse perfectly positioned behind Mt. Cristo Rey.

The lunar eclipse took place in the middle of the night here on the borderland, and as much as I tried to stay up past 3 a.m., I, unfortunately, didn’t wake up in time to witness the cosmic event.

That wasn’t the case for native El Pasoan and photographer Jorge Garcia. Instead, he waited patiently for the lunar eclipse to elapse and ended up capturing one of the most breathtaking photos of Mt. Cristo Rey with the Super Flower Blood Moon lunar eclipse behind it in full effect.

Missed it, as I did? No worries, we’ve got plenty of time until the next supermoon and total lunar eclipse combo, which will occur on October 8, 2033.
