El Paso, Texas Reports First Flu-Related Death of the Season
The City of El Paso has announced its first flu-related death of the respiratory season.
Unfortunately, it’s that time of the year where germs travel and everyone in the office starts getting sick.
City-County Local Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza shared his condolences after reporting that a girl under 13 with underlying health conditions was the first Flu-related death of the season in the El Paso area.
“The best protection against the flu and its serious complications is vaccination. We urge everyone aged 6 months and older to get their flu shot,” Dr. Ocaranza said.
City health officials are emphasizing the importance of flu vaccinations. Flu shots are available for free on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, at the following locations:
- Ysleta Community Clinic: 110 Candelaria St.
- Henderson Community Clinic: 721 S. Mesa St.
- Northeast Community Clinic: 9566 Railroad Dr.
- Westside Community Clinic: 7380 Remcon Cir.
City officials noted a sharp increase in flu cases compared to last year, with 722 cases reported from October to December 2023, up from 280 in 2022.
According to the CDC, high-risk groups include seniors, young children, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions.
