
El Paso Honors August 3rd Shooting Victims With Citywide Remembrance Events
It has been six years since our community was shaken by the unimaginable tragedy of August 3rd. But if there's one thing we know about El Paso, it's that we are resilient. We are strong. We are one. And this August, our city is coming together in numerous ways to remember the 23 lives we tragically lost and to continue our journey of healing.
There are so many opportunities to participate in this collective remembrance. From moments of quiet reflection to community-wide events, here’s a look at how El Paso is honoring the six-year anniversary of August 3rd:
Find Your Moment of Reflection & Connection:
- A City-Wide Remembrance Ceremony (August 3, 9:30 AM at 7500 WH Burges): The City of El Paso and the Border Network for Human Rights invite everyone to a formal Remembrance Ceremony to honor the 23 lives lost. It's a moment to stand together as a community.
- "Unite With Light" (July 28 - August 8, starting 8:30 PM nightly): Let's light up El Paso! Residents are encouraged to display orange lights in their porches and windows to honor the victims. Iconic landmarks and buildings will also be illuminated in orange. Take an evening stroll and see our city shine.
- "Star on the Mountain" (August 3, 8:30 PM): Our iconic star on the Franklin Mountains will shine brightly, flashing 23 times in honor of each life lost. Take a moment to look up and remember.
- Remembrance Display at Council Chambers (July 29 - August 8): Visit the outside of the council chambers to view a tribute displaying the pictures of the 23 individuals we lost.
Engage in Community Healing & Creativity:
- August 3rd Day of Resilience Ceremony (August 3, 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM at Ascarate Park, County of El Paso Healing Garden): Join El Paso County and United Way of El Paso for an evening of remembrance in the Healing Garden. Expect music, a prayer, and the reading of names.
- Yoga & Sound Bath Meditations (Various Dates & Locations): Find moments of peace and tranquility through yoga and sound bath meditations organized by Live Active El Paso in collaboration with United Way of El Paso. Check the dates and locations in the first graphic!
- "August 3rd Memorial Poppies" & "August 3rd Memorial Items" Exhibits (August 2-3 at El Paso Museum of History): Visit the museum to see a digital wall memorial with blooming Mexican Gold Poppies and recovered objects from the original memorial. It’s a powerful way to connect with our collective memory.
- "August 3rd Memorial" Display (August 2 at El Paso Museum of Archaeology): The Museum of Archaeology will also have a small display in their lobby to honor the anniversary.
- Grandview Strong El Paso Memorial (August 1, 10:30 AM at Grandview Thornton Community Center): The Grandview community invites everyone to participate in their memorial, which will include orange ribbons, the reading of 23 names, and a balloon release.
- August 3rd Remembrance Paper Lanterns (August 2, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM at Clardy Fox Library): Create a paper lantern in honor of those who have passed. Instructions and materials will be provided. It's a beautiful way to express remembrance.
- DIY Luminaries (August 2, 3:00 PM at Judge Marquez Library): Create a luminary to help light up the August Third Memorial at Jim Crouch Park. All materials will be provided.
- August 3rd Remembrance Banner (August 2, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM at Westside Library): Contribute to a community banner that will be displayed in the library throughout August as a reminder.
- Hearts & Remembrance Tree Family Craft (August 2, 3:00 PM at Dorris Van Doren Library): Decorate a small heart-shaped paper tree in this family-friendly craft activity.
- August Memorial Craft Hour (August 2, 4:00 PM at Irving Schwartz Library - Children's Room): Kids can create Star on the Mountain scenes using construction paper, glue, and crayons. This craft honors the beauty and strength of our city.
- August 3rd Memorial Rock Painting (August 2, 3:00 PM at Jose Cisneros Library): Paint rocks in honor of those affected by the tragedy. Feel free to leave your painted rock or take one with positive affirmations.
- El Paso Strong Tote Bag Painting (August 2, 3:00 PM at Richard Burges Public Library): Decorate tote bags in remembrance of August 3rd. Supplies are provided and this activity is recommended for ages 6 and up.
- August 3rd Remembrance El Paso Strong Canvas Painting (August 2, 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM at Memorial Park Library): Paint an "El Paso Strong" message on canvas in honor of those who have passed.
- August 3 Memorial Candelarias (August 1, 4:00 PM-5:00 PM at Sergio Troncoso Library): Make a Candelaria to remember the victims on Sunday, August 3. Supplies will be provided, free of charge.
- A Collage of El Paso (July 31, 4:00-6:00 PM at Armijo Library): Contribute your photos and pictures of El Paso to create a collaborative art display that shows what our city means to us.
- Stained Glass Bookmarks (July 31, 5:30-6:30 PM at Enrique Moreno Library): Design and create bookmarks with messages of remembrance and strength that represent the "El Paso Strong" spirit.
- The Heart of El Paso Planting Seeds of Hope (August 1, 3:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. at Chamizal Express Library):This event will include a motivational speaker, a moment of remembrance, crafts, and light refreshments. All are welcome.
- Tween Time Activity (August 3, 3:00 P.M. at Main Library): Join in decorating bags that hold flameless candles in remembrance of the August 3rd tragedy.

- EP Strong Adult Softball Tournament (July 26-27 at Marty Robbins, Blackie Chesher & Joey Barraza Sports Complexes): While not explicitly a memorial event, the spirit of community and strength shines through in these athletic competitions.
