What is A Kermes?

A Kermés is basically a lively, community-style festival that’s super popular in Latin American countries—especially Mexico. Think of it like a fun school carnival or church fair, but with way better food, vibrant music, and a whole lotta culture sprinkled on top.

Here’s what you’ll usually find at a Kermés:

  • Games: Ring toss, lotería (Mexican bingo), cake walks, and other classic fair-style games.

  • Food booths: Elotes, tacos, tostilocos, aguas frescas, churros, and most importantly GORDITAS! (But expect to wait hours in line for some deliciousness!)

  • Entertainment: Folklórico dancing, live music, maybe a DJ or mariachi band.

  • Raffle tickets and prizes: Local businesses or volunteers often donate goodies to win.

  • Sometimes rides: Smaller Kermeses might not have big rides, but larger ones sometimes bring in kiddie rides or bounce houses.

They're usually organized by schools, churches, or nonprofits to raise money for programs and they’re a total vibe. It's like the whole community comes together for one big fiesta.

El Pasoan, Guadalupe Robledo, did every El Pasoan a favor and called up each church in El Paso to find out when they would be having their Kermes and she shared the list with us! (You’re the real MVP Guadalupe!!)
