El Paso Charities Get Huge Financial Boost From Billionaire

What do you do when you divorce one of the richest men in the world after being married to him for 25 years? Well, you get a divorce settlement of 36 billion dollars and then you go around giving away a lot of that money.

MacKenzie Scott was married to Jeff Bezos, the man who developed and grew Amazon into one of the most profitable companies in the world, for 25 years. A couple of years ago, they divorced and instead of wandering around the world on yachts wearing couture, Scott decided to spread the wealth, literally.

In mid-July, Scott wrote a blog post about wanting to give away "the majority of my wealth back to the society that helped generate it". She set about finding organizations at a local level around the country to give money to. In four months, she has given away $4 billion. That's a helluva lot of money. And three El Paso organizations were chosen to get some of that windfall.

Scott's group gave money to organizations she said could show that they had a positive impact on their community. The YWCA El Paso del Norte Region is getting a $20 million gift from Scott's group. El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank and the United Way of El Paso County are also getting a gift from Scott.
