El Paso Authors Childrens Book Is Hitting The Shelves!
Native El Pasoan Deanna Salcido Gutierrez is celebrating the release of her debut book, El Paso Placita, A Tour for a Little Señorita. This charming picture book takes readers on a visual journey through the Borderland, capturing the rich cultural essence of El Paso.
El Paso Placita follows La Señorita, a young girl whose parents guide her on a tour across the city. Through vibrant illustrations, readers explore beloved local landmarks such as Segundo Barrio, the El Paso Zoo, Chico's Tacos, and San Jacinto Plaza. Beyond the visuals, the heart of the book is its focus on family, tradition, and the deep-rooted cultural pride of the region.
"But mostly, this book is about family and tradition, and our culture. And I kind of wanted that, too, to be forthright," Salcido Gutierrez explains.
For Deanna, the inspiration for the book came three years ago while reading stories to her children. “I’ve always enjoyed writing, but one night I was reading a story about El Paso to my kids, and I thought, ‘I’d love to write one of my own.’ That same night, I went into my room and wrote the first draft of this book.”
After sharing her early draft with her family and receiving their encouragement, the journey from idea to publication began. “My kids really enjoyed it, and when I shared it with my parents, they loved it, too. That’s when I thought this could really be something special.” With the support of local publisher, Peanut Publishing run by Sahily Loya Cuellar, El Paso Placita finally became a reality.
The book’s personal significance shines through, especially for those who share a deep connection to the area. “People who grew up in El Paso know every place in this book. I've had people cry. I've cried myself, but I think it's just more emotional because this is about my family. I hope they can take away really good, happy memories.” The books message is felt even more deeply with the beautiful illustrations done by local artist, Mozelle Espino.
