Did you know you can now leisurely pedal your way along Ascarate Lake or on Ascarate Lake in a boat or on a bicycle? With the weather getting warmer and soon after hotter, weekends will lend themselves a lot more to enjoying the great outdoors again.

As the largest public-use recreational park in El Paso County, Ascarate Park offers playgrounds, and basketball and handball courts as well as fishing and kayaking on Ascarate Lake. And now you can even explore the big lake by pedal boat.

Not since the county actively operated the Blue Gill Boat and Grill some years ago have pedal boats been available for rent at the lake. But Borderplex Adventures is bringing pedal power back.

The family-owned local business run by husband-and-wife team Jesse and Rebecca Guajardo has pedal boats and bicycles available to rent for those who want to add a fun family or couples activity to their weekend outing, picnic, or grill-out.

Spend an hour on the water exploring and experiencing the lake from a different perspective. There’s a lot of lake at Ascarate, 48 acres to be exact, so you definitely won’t be for a lack of adventure.

Pedal boats are $40/hr (life vests included) for 2 adults and 2 kids. 500lbs. max weight.

Why Hike When You Can Bike

Or maybe you would rather bike the boardwalk along the lake or get all ambitious and pedal around the whole park. Borderplex Adventures got you there, too.

Yes, you can always haul your own bikes to the park, but if you don’t want the hassle simply rent one when you get there. Bicycle rentals include 26" adult bikes (Mountain Speed & Cruisers), 20" kid bikes, and bike trailers to haul the little ones.

Adult: $25/2hrs
Kids: $15/2hrs
Bike Trailers: $15/2hrs

Borderplex Adventures operates most Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Guajardo tells me they “post up by the boat ramp” and are “currently operating 2 weekends back to back, then off for one.” He suggests you give them a follow on Facebook to find out when they’ll be there.
