Don't miss this new innovative retelling of the classic and timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge or, in this case, Jeremias as he comes to life in this reimagined local version.

For over 175 years, A Christmas Carol has been retold and reenacted on stages and screens worldwide; from movies to cartoons, the classic story hasn't changed much until I saw El Chuco Christmas.

Thanks to a few friends, I was invited to attend the opening night of El Chuco Christmas at the historic Adobe Horseshoe Dinner Theatre in San Elizario.

Set in the mid-80s, El Chuco Christmas does an impressive job of breathing new life into the old tale by incorporating local landmarks, humor, culture, music, and dialects straight from the borderland.

Led by an all-local bilingual acting troop, Los Actores gave a truly spectacular performance that lured me into the past, present, and future following Jeremias (Scrooge), portrayed by the ever so talented veteran actor Carlos De La Garza Garcia.

A stripped-down stage invites audience members to fully immerse and invest themselves in each character, including the electrifying arrival of the ghosts of Christmas past and present played by the intrepid Raul Chavez that will have you in stitches and tears simultaneously.

Rounding out the cast, Oscar Ariel Arriaga and his son Nikolas Arriaga do a great job as Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim or, in this case, Pepe and Toño. Tadeo Garcia, who portrays Jeremias' nephew, along with Martha Foix, Noraya Ccoyure, and Louis Foix III, shine on stage, balancing out the cast perfectly.

I honestly did not expect to be so moved by a story that I've heard throughout all my life. Still, El Chuco Christmas not only delivered the magic of life and love, but it also lifted my heart and holiday spirit, reminding me that nothing is more precious than family in this timeless tale full of local flavor.

A special shoutout also goes out to the whole staff and crew, including Yvette from Pistoleros Del Adobe Cantina Grill for doing a great job of serving up dinner and drinks all night long.
