Texas Students Are Getting Creative With Grad Cap Messages
College graduations in El Paso, TX have begun! Many proud students prepared for years to walk that stage, while wearing their cap and gown, and proudly grabbing those diplomas they worked hard to earn!
Growing up, I remember I always loved seeing how creative college students would get when it came to decorating their graduation caps. It was a way for student’s to not only help their parents spot them in the crowd, but it helped students express themselves through messages on their caps.
One of the most beloved traditions among college grads is decorating their mortarboards, AKA the flat-top graduation caps
What started as a quiet form of self-expression has grown into a full-on DIY movement. For some grads, it’s about shouting out their major. For others, it’s all about honoring their families, or flexing future plans.
Others use their caps to spotlight culture, identity, or even activism. It’s basically your academic résumé and Pinterest board had a baby.
But not all schools love the sparkle. Some universities have straight-up banned cap decorating, citing reasons like uniformity, tradition, or maintaining a “professional image.” (Which is kinda ironic for a ceremony where you wear a robe and a funny square hat, but okay.) Still, many schools fully embrace it.

Student’s at El Paso Community College proudly decorated their caps and photos of the awesome caps were shared on social media.
