A birthday celebration was held earlier this week for one of Canutillo Independent School Districts female officers. However, this female officer isn’t your average officer because well, she’s a Belgian Malinois canine!

Alis the K9 Officer has been with CISD since 2018 and she serves as the only K9 officer for the district.

She is a fully certified canine officer that is unique in her own way because she can sniff drugs and is the only K9 officer in the region that is a certified weapon sniffing dog.

Alis is used as a deterrent to prevent people from bringing guns onto any campus. She patrols different campuses daily, but everyday after a shift she goes home to her handler, CISD police officer Enrique Lugo.

“Being an on campus K9 officer is a full-time commitment,” said CISD Director of Communications, Gustavo Reveles. “Our district is lucky enough to have Alis. We are the smallest school district in the area to have a K9 officer for our campuses.”

This past week, Alis celebrated her 7th birthday at Alderete Middle School, the campus where she spends most of her time at.

Alis' handler, Enrique, and other CISD police officers gathered together in the school’s conference room to sing happy birthday to Alis and the precious moment was caught on video and shared on CISD’s Facebook page.

Alis was able to enjoy a delicious doggy cake to celebrate her big day and I hope she got all the cuddles and belly rubs she deserves.

Happy Birthday Alis! Keep up the good work.
