A 23-year old El Paso man is out on bail after being involved in a Thanksgiving night shopping free-for-all at a Northeast El Paso Walmart.

Ruben Garcia was observed stepping on and attempting to take a television from an elderly lady. According to the police report, the woman was at the bottom of a pile of Black Friday shoppers fighting to grab a hold of a 50-inch television which the Walmart on Dyer near Fred Wilson was selling for $150.

The officer, who was employed in an off duty capacity by Walmart to provide security during the sale, attempted to pull Garcia off the woman after she was heard crying and asking for help. Garcia refused to release the television and began to struggle with the officer choking him and striking him in the chest multiple times during the struggle. A second officer gained control of Garcia and placed him under arrest.

He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a charge of Assault on a Public Servant and held on a $5,000 bond. He has since bonded out.

Cell phone video of the melee went viral and made national headlines over the weekend.
