If you're looking to spend some quiet bonding time with your child, consider taking him or her to the next Kid Fish Derby at Ascarate Park.

And a lack of fishing experience or gear isn't a problem, either. Fishing poles and bait will be provided for registered children to use during the event.

The Ascarate Fishing Club is hosting the free fishing event for kids ages 3 - 16 this Saturday, June 11, and its members will happily teach kids fishing basics.

Just take along a cap, sun screen, bug spray, water, a camping chair or two, and your driver license to check out a pole and you're all set.

The county did a catfish drop in the big lake recently, so chances are pretty good your child will get a few nibbles and bites.

If not from catfish than maybe he or she will reel in a large mouth bass, sun perch, carp, or one of the other types of fish you'll generally find in the lake. Either way, it's bound to be a huge thrill.
