Many of us don't ever really have to worry about keeping our pantry or tummy filled. But some of my and your neighbors don't have it so good.

The sad reality is hundreds of thousands of El Pasoans face each day with no guarantee of where their next meal is coming from, and the majority of those who have to skip meals or eat less than they should are children.

But you can help El Paso's food insecure during the 20th annual MLK Canned Food Drive that is now underway. Helping the citywide effort to re-stock local food pantries is as easy as going through your cupboards.

Please join me in keeping Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of serving others alive by gathering up and donating a few of the canned food items you have lying around so that organizations that includes churches, soup kitchens and shelters can continue their mission of making sure no one goes hungry.

Canned and other nonperishable food items can be dropped off through Monday, January 20, 2020 in collection bins located at the drop-off sites listed below:

  • Vista Quality Markets, 3116 N. Piedras, 1400 E. Yandell, 3920 Doniphan, 2231 N. Zaragosa
  • Any of our public libraries
  • Sam's Club Northeast, 9498 Gateway N & Diana
  • El Paso County Courthouse, third floor
  • County Sheriff’s Downtown Jail, headquarters and annex
