If you would like to get out of town for the Fourth of July, head up to the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo. They are having their annual July 4th Fireworks Extravaganza with a members-only tailgate party in their parking lot. There will be a live band, Aces & Eights, and a huge fireworks show.

While you're there, check out the museum's exhibit on El Paso native Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek franchise. The museum has props and models of the starships used in the show. You can also see items that El Paso astronaut, Danny Olivas, donated to the museum.

We've taken my sons and our granddaughters to the museum on a number of occasions and it is always a fun trip. The kids love seeing all of the exhibits and going to see a movie in the museum's theater. This quick day trip is worth it anytime of the year, but especially if you want to make it a couple of days getaway.

If you want full details about the museum, check out their Facebook page.
