Calling all (practicing) Catholics in El Paso, it's that time of year again!

That's right, the Lenten season is upon us. Ash Wednesday is upon us and that means that forty days later it'll be Easter Sunday.

For many, it's a wonderful time of year; a time to reflect and strengthen your relationship with God. For some, it's just those 40 days and nights before Easter where we get to decorate eggs and admire cute bunnies.

If you're not a religious person then this time of year may seem a bit confusing- but don't worry, I'm here to give you a guide to Lent. Here are four undeniable sign that Lent season has arrived in the Borderland.

Ash Wednesday

First things first on Wednesday you're going to notice quite a lot of people with ashes on their forehead, some will resemble a cross and some will just resemble a smudge- don't panic! The people with the ashes on their forehead are aware. Don't, for whatever reason try to clean it off the persons forehead.

Lenten Menu

Many places around the Borderland will start to offer a Lenten menu which usually consists of seafood. The usual places will offer fish or shrimp- and because many will observe a red meatless Friday this is really the time for Long John Silver's to shine. My favorite is the Filet-O-Fish!

Keep Temptation Away

Many Catholics will give up something for Lent- it doesn't have to be a big sacrifice. Many will give up things like social media, chocolate or some even add some stuff like maybe more vegetables at dinner or set to read more. Either way- you will probably hear about it and the phrase you'll hear most is "oh, I gave that up for Lent'.

Easter Overload

Stores are about to (if they haven't already) fill the shelves with Easter stuff- egg dying kits and stuffed bunnies are big sellers. It might feel like another holiday created by a candy company, but it's a very meaningful holiday to many. So, to my fellow Catholics, peace be with you.
